Wolo Case Study: Supporting a Mother of Three Through Breast Cancer
A mother of three young children under seven was referred to Wolo by the NHS during her chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. She contacted Wolo as she was struggling hugely with the physical and emotional side effects of chemotherapy and was finding it hard to care for her children and maintain her household.
She described the physical concerns they faced: “I am suffering the effects of chemo. Terribly fatigued, muscle and joint aches, bone pain.” Managing her family life became overwhelming: “There’s extra pressure and stress on me to look after the children alone (while my husband works long hours to support us), keeping on top of household chores like cleaning. On my bad days, it’s a struggle, and the strain is very overwhelming.”
In the initial assessment all families complete, she rated her quality of life and mental health as 4/10, showing how much they were struggling to cope. In response to this, Wolo provided therapy sessions, a cleaner, a place on Wolo’s exclusive 6-week wellness course and the opportunity to attend free family events. Wolo has had a huge impact on this family’s life:
“Wolo isn’t just something that made a difference in my life—it’s part of my life. I truly felt my hand was held throughout my cancer diagnosis and treatment, and after treatment when I actually needed them the most. Wolo has impacted every part of my life: my mental health, my career, my relationship with my husband, my relationships with friends and family, my physical health and well-being. I wouldn’t be in the positive place I am today without them.”
After the well-being course, she rated her quality of life and emotional health/well-being as 8/10. Wolo’s support has not only improved her mental health and quality of life but has also strengthened her social connections, allowing this family to meet others going through similar journeys.
“WOLO has provided endless opportunities to connect with other people, their partners and children who have had similar experiences. People I am so proud to call my friends. I couldn’t imagine a life without WOLO present.”
