Here’s Darren Evans Ode about the run.
Wolo Half
It’s October the 10th, it is a Sunday,
It’s the Brighton Half, and we’re on our way,
We had to wake up, when it was still dark,
Then to Brighton Marina, where we will park,
Justin that morning, had pick ups to do,
Adam and Liz, and then Jason too,
We both parked up, as per instructions,
It was lovely to make, new introductions,
We chatted for a while, over porridge’s made,
Went to Maccy D’s toilet, then Marine Parade,
As we got to the start, we bumped in to friends,
“What time will you do?”, it all depends,
Met Marcus and Chris, down at the start,
The horn then sounds, and runners depart,
We are then running, 13.1 miles,
Lots of excitement, cheering and smiles,
The sky then clouds over, it gets pretty chilly,
First part of the course, is a little bit hilly,
At the Sealife centre, right to Ovingdean,
Pass Brighton Marina, a beautiful scene,
We then double back, the crowds we do hear,
As we all turn right, near the Palace Pier,
We start to thin out, no longer a pack,
As we run up to the Level, then make our way back,
Run past St Peter’s, the Pavillion stands proud,
And a shout of “Dad”, is heard from the crowd,
My daughter Shannon, and her friend Mo,
They’re volunteers, and were wearing WOLO,
I gave a high five, without even slowing,
Then around the corner, on to Hove we are going,
We’re midway point, on this iconic course,
At The Ship Hotel, I spy Rockinghorse,
I shout “Where is Janella?”, as I arrive,
She suddenly appears, and we give a high five,
We continue our run, we just passed The Grand,
In the distance the sound, of a Samba band,
All dressed in Purple, the drums hit a beat,
A lift for the soul, a musical treat,
We make our way up, to Millionaires row,
A Marshall there saying, less than 5k to go,
Western Esplanade, I then take my turn,
Thats when my Achilles, started to burn,
My pace slows up, I use mental powers,
Will I finish the race, in under 2 hours,
Run passed King Alfred, then on to West Pier,
I’m feeling it now, but the end is quite near,
Achilles on fire, my cadence is shot,
My good running form, now an unbalanced trot,
Not far to go, then “Dad!” I do hear,
Much needed support, by the Palace Pier,
Natalie and Ashley, my daughter and son,
More family support, near the end of my run,
My 3 grandchildren, their partners there too,
I needed that then, much more than they knew,
Run down to the finish, good feeling inside,
Endorphins take charge, and helping my stride,
There’s Fler from WOLO, with Ava and Bella,
I then cross the line, with some random fella,
That’s it it’s over, I then feel the pain,
I pick up my medal, start to hobble again,
Make my way back, to cheer people in,
There’s 2 WOLO runners, Marcus and Justin,
They cross the line, and it’s brilliant to see,
As Marcus is on, chemo-therapy,
Soon after them, and Jason appears,
He crosses the line, and bursts in to tears,
Although the blue sky, has now turned to cloud,
His wife that he lost, she would be so proud,
Then it is Liz, she finishes her race,
Emotion is etched, all over her face,
Persistence and grit, she won’t be defeated,
The Brighton half marathon, we all have completed,
To everyone involved, you all played a part,
Supporting WOLO, and running with heart,
You’ve all done amazing, you all passed the test,
This WOLO community, is simply the best,
