A wonderful little girl called Venus is now part of a special Wolo Wolf pack

Earlier this month Wolo arranged a photoshoot for a wonderful little girl called Venus and her family - including her beautiful dogs. Thanks so much to Sonia Hallam Photography for the photos - she has captured some beautiful moments - that will be treasured forever.

Venus

We helped out at a Charity event,

Lots of people, came and went,

At Martello field, the event was held.

For Cancer awareness, WOLO excelled,

To the WOLO stall, a family came,

I met a young girl, Venus her name,

Her Mum and Dad, Rob and Michelle,

Said Venus, had not been feeling that well,

Treatment for cancer, she’s finding it tough,

Transfusions to help her, stop feeling rough,

She told us that she, liked Wolves a lot,

A Wolf spirit protector, that she had got,

Shiba Inus, are her 2 dogs,

There’s Yoko Ono and Mr Fox,

I wanted to help, so had an idea,

To try help Venus, cope with her fear,

Over in Germany, I have a friend,

A message to Mona La Loba, I had to send,

She is a Shaman, and leads a Wolf pack,

“I’ll be glad to help”, the reply she sent back,

She created a video, a message of hope,

Specially for Venus, to help her cope,

A chat with WOLO, and it was decided,

That a Wolf necklace, she also provided,

It arrived in the post, I gave Justin a lift,

To deliver to Venus, this amazing gift,

We met her again, she showed us around,

What happened next, was really profound,

We showed the video, a smile on her face,

Then presented to her, the Wolf necklace,

She seemed to like it, so very much,

And since that day, we’ve kept in touch,

Thanks go to Mona, for all that she gave,

And to Venus for being, so strong and so brave,

Courage and Wisdom, no longer to lack,

She is now part of, a special Wolf pack,

We work with local businesses and communities to offer families a wealth of services to support them through their diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

Statistics show that 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Life is precious - we need to make the most of it - we only live once - WOLO!

The power of the Wim Hof Method and Wolo

Last weekend was a truly amazing experience for WOLO Foundation. We were lucky enough to be invited by Mark Anthony Cropley and Matt from The Wellderness on a The Iceman (Wim Hof) Fundamentals course in the nature let by Will Van Zyl.

The The Iceman (Wim Hof) method can be defined by its simple, easy-to-apply approach and its strong scientific foundation. It’s a practical way to become happier, healthier and stronger.

Wim Hof says - ‘Over time, our relationship with the world we live in has changed. Our lifestyles have disconnected us from the natural environment. Because of this disconnection, our age-old survival mechanisms are no longer triggered and we’ve lost touch with our inner power. Through decades of self-exploration and groundbreaking scientific studies, Wim has created a simple, effective way to stimulate these deep physiological processes and realise our full potential.

The power of the Wim Hof Method is the combination of the three pillars. A committed, consistent practice including the breathing technique and cold exposure can help you unlock a host of benefits including;

- Increased energy

- Better sleep

- Reduced stress levels

- Heightened focus & determination

- Increased willpower

- Stronger immune system

The Wim Hof Method is about reconnecting us - to ourselves, to others and to nature.’

Here’s Darren Evans Ode about the run.

Wolo Half

It’s October the 10th, it is a Sunday,

It’s the Brighton Half, and we’re on our way,

We had to wake up, when it was still dark,

Then to Brighton Marina, where we will park,

Justin that morning, had pick ups to do,

Adam and Liz, and then Jason too,

We both parked up, as per instructions,

It was lovely to make, new introductions,

We chatted for a while, over porridge’s made,

Went to Maccy D’s toilet, then Marine Parade,

As we got to the start, we bumped in to friends,

“What time will you do?”, it all depends,

Met Marcus and Chris, down at the start,

The horn then sounds, and runners depart,

We are then running, 13.1 miles,

Lots of excitement, cheering and smiles,

The sky then clouds over, it gets pretty chilly,

First part of the course, is a little bit hilly,

At the Sealife centre, right to Ovingdean,

Pass Brighton Marina, a beautiful scene,

We then double back, the crowds we do hear,

As we all turn right, near the Palace Pier,

We start to thin out, no longer a pack,

As we run up to the Level, then make our way back,

Run past St Peter’s, the Pavillion stands proud,

And a shout of “Dad”, is heard from the crowd,

My daughter Shannon, and her friend Mo,

They’re volunteers, and were wearing WOLO,

I gave a high five, without even slowing,

Then around the corner, on to Hove we are going,

We’re midway point, on this iconic course,

At The Ship Hotel, I spy Rockinghorse,

I shout “Where is Janella?”, as I arrive,

She suddenly appears, and we give a high five,

We continue our run, we just passed The Grand,

In the distance the sound, of a Samba band,

All dressed in Purple, the drums hit a beat,

A lift for the soul, a musical treat,

We make our way up, to Millionaires row,

A Marshall there saying, less than 5k to go,

Western Esplanade, I then take my turn,

Thats when my Achilles, started to burn,

My pace slows up, I use mental powers,

Will I finish the race, in under 2 hours,

Run passed King Alfred, then on to West Pier,

I’m feeling it now, but the end is quite near,

Achilles on fire, my cadence is shot,

My good running form, now an unbalanced trot,

Not far to go, then “Dad!” I do hear,

Much needed support, by the Palace Pier,

Natalie and Ashley, my daughter and son,

More family support, near the end of my run,

My 3 grandchildren, their partners there too,

I needed that then, much more than they knew,

Run down to the finish, good feeling inside,

Endorphins take charge, and helping my stride,

There’s Fler from WOLO, with Ava and Bella,

I then cross the line, with some random fella,

That’s it it’s over, I then feel the pain,

I pick up my medal, start to hobble again,

Make my way back, to cheer people in,

There’s 2 WOLO runners, Marcus and Justin,

They cross the line, and it’s brilliant to see,

As Marcus is on, chemo-therapy,

Soon after them, and Jason appears,

He crosses the line, and bursts in to tears,

Although the blue sky, has now turned to cloud,

His wife that he lost, she would be so proud,

Then it is Liz, she finishes her race,

Emotion is etched, all over her face,

Persistence and grit, she won’t be defeated,

The Brighton half marathon, we all have completed,

To everyone involved, you all played a part,

Supporting WOLO, and running with heart,

You’ve all done amazing, you all passed the test,

This WOLO community, is simply the best,

1000 mile journey cycling around Sussex in 20 days.

This is a clever and inspiring account of Alice’s epic 1000 mile journey cycling around Sussex in 20 days.

Yello Velo

There is a cyclist, her names Alice B,

She rides a yellow bike, for everyone to see,

Through every village, this bike she has rode,

A journey through every, Sussex post code,

The Sussex 1000, this adventure she takes,

Awareness and fundraising, for WOLO she makes,

We met her at Cadence, she told us her route,

We had just found, our new WOLO recruit,

For 20 days, she’ll ride 50 miles,

Tell us her story, with photos and smiles,

Talked about WOLO, wherever she went,

Overnight in a field, she slept in a tent,

To cycle every day, over that distance,

She’ll need a good seat, or she’ll feel some resistance,

Started her journey, from a village called Hammer,

It comes to an end, when she reaches Camber,

She’s done really well, and seen all the sights,

These are a few, of her adventure highlights,

A village called Easebourne, so tranquil and mellow,

Most of the houses, are painted shades of yellow,

Onto Southwater, green fingered communing,

They’re pretty serious, about their hedges and pruning,

Cycled through Balcombe, couldn’t believe her luck,

A guy selling drinks, from a bright yellow Truck,

For Thursday we planned, a Clubhouse update,

But no Wi-fi for Alice, so it would have to wait,

Then a coffee at Fittleworth, with Justin Wright,

Before heading off, to another campsite,

Saturday where am I, she gave us an inkling,

At what3words, shot.dimension.twinkling

A drink to give energy, before cycling convenes,

Made with Liquid Spirit Coffee beans

Something to help, fight the onset of cramp,

A firepit burning, at the lovely Earth Camp,

On Tuesday a photo, of a lovely sunrise,

And to 1 of our friends, we say our goodbyes,

3 WOLO members, last week we lost,

A reminder to live life, no matter the cost,

We celebrate their lives, by planting a tree,

To be remembered forever, naturally,

I just read a post, of an article showing,

In the Shoreham Herald , the interest is growing,

A really good piece, about Alice B,

And the connection with WOLO, was so good to see,

The weathers been kind, the sun has been shining,

In the clear night sky, the stars are aligning,

Onto Northiam, and there’s lots to like,

There was a statue of a fish, riding a bike,

She’s Staying at Slindon, cycled 98k,

Visits the Upwaltham, Cadance Cafe,

Today is Friday, set up WOLO fest,

We want to get it right, and make it the best,

We catch up on Alice, she is doing good,

Camping Thursday night, at Blackberry Wood,

It’s been a long day, keep those eyes peeled,

As you make your way, to one more farmers field,

The weather is nice, and relatively calm,

Setting up camp, at Netherfield Farm,

Early this morning, she made her way,

To be with all of us, here today,

She’s here for a reason, a personal plight,

Her Dad he had cancer, sadly lost his fight,

Like all we have lost, she loved him so much,

Those memories now, our hearts often touch,

But this isn’t a time, to cast a sad shroud,

From wherever he is, he would be so proud,

Sadness and grief, we all share that feeling,

All these emotions, are part of the healing,

Although they are gone, take a moment to remember,

As we play in the sun, on this day in September,

For those that are here, still fighting or cured,

And those family members, for what you’ve endured,

This can be a catalyst, to make a new start,

Whilst keeping them close, deep in our heart,

Whatever happens, we can’t change the past,

This is the the future, and it goes pretty fast,

So choose who you are, what you want to do,

After today make a pledge, for something that’s new,

We’ve been together, for just a few hours,

This moment in time, the present is ours,

Whether brother or sister, daughter or son,

Make each moment count, and try to have fun,

Whether Mummy or Daddy, Husband or Wife,

It’s your WOLO moment, it’s part of your life,

After the raffle, Alice made her way,

Tent to set up, to end this great day,

Sunday morning, she leaves Polegate,

She has an appointment, at Rathfinny Estate,

She stops for a coffee, along the way,

Met the guys at Litlington, Cadence Cafe,

Then on to Rathfinny, for a glass of wine,

Lucky for Alice, the weathers still fine,

She camps overnight, at the lovely Firle camp,

Monday morning forecast, is windy and damp

A tough morning cycle, as she sets off to Ford,

The wind is howling, and the rain has just poured,

Took a photo at Lewes, with her mobile phone lens,

The window at Yule Cottage, of some Barbies and Kens,

At the Falmer Stadium, a Seagulls (Brighton & Hove Albion FC) advert,

With the number 1000, on the back of her shirt,

Along to North Brighton, to see some street art,

2 kissing parakeets, that touches her heart,

Then a stop at Angmering, and high up above,

An amazing full Rainbow, she sends us with love,

It’s day 18, just 3 days to go,

With rain and wind, 2 days in a row,

At Ford open prison, where prisoners roam,

An Ice Cream at Bosham, and lots of sea foam,

She’s cycling to Selsey, before it gets dark,

For a stay at Warner Farm, Holiday Park,

The final stages, along the coast road,

Pass a flat in Shoreham, which is her abode,

To Telscombe Cliffs, as the strong wind blew,

And a meet up with friends, for a barbecue,

She stays overnight, at the lovely Stud Farm,

The evening weather, was a bit more calm,

She sets off again, on this final morning,

The forecast is for, a yellow Gale warning,

I did the school run, put my bike in the Dub,

Then we met up at 9, at the Sailing Club,

Her friend was there, her name Aurelie,

As the Yellow Ferry, set out to sea,

Fler was there too, with Daisy and Buddy,

The rain had held off, so it wasn’t that muddy,

Along to Hope Gap, and that Seven Sisters scene,

Then we cycled through Friston, on our way to East Dean,

We met Justin and Marcos, at the Tiger Inn,

Their part of the journey, would now begin,

2 Cadence bikes, they would be using,

Both were electric, which I found amusing,

They cycled to Eastbourne, just a few miles,

Met Matt at Cadence, for a coffee and smiles,

She continues her journey, to Dungeness,

A few hills today, to test her fitness.

That’s it, it’s over, at Camber she reaches,

On a day where she passed, a number of beaches,

One thousand miles, through Sussex she mastered,

Time for a drink, and maybe get plastered,

An amazing journey, so magical and free,

It was called Yello Velo, and she’s Alice B.

WOLO wouldn’t exist, and I hope you concur,

If it wasn’t for our founders, Justin and Fler,

What they have done, their goal pretty clear,

To create something special, in just over a year,

They’ve made a difference, this is their cause,

So let’s give them a cheer, and a round of applause.

It’s not too late to sponsor and help her beat her target, that would absolutely make her day!

We’re excited to launch our new collaboration with Sussex Boat Trips

We’re excited to launch our new collaboration with Sussex Boat Trips - we are sure this will help not only families that have been affected by cancer, but anyone who loves the trying something new and exploring where we live from another perspective - and of course, creating a new #wolomoment - it could be a life changing one.

We were lucky enough to experience this incredible activity last week for some family fun! We only live once!

Our recent event at the stunning Follers Manor Garden was a huge success!

Wolo’s first event since the pandemic hit, it was a fantastic community effort! Thank you to all of the bakers (we’d never seen so many cakes!), the tombola donors, the stall holders, the marquee erectors, the sign makers, the cake servers, the tea queens, the traffic wardens, the car park kings, the washer uppers, the cleaners, the advisors, and all of the people who came along to show their support - THANK YOU! We are still waiting on the final total, so will update you as soon as we can. Huge thank you to Anne & Geoff for giving Wolo the opportunity to raise awareness and funds - and for sharing their stunning gardens. They are simply beautiful. A fabulous day all round.

Making life fun and enjoying the moment

It’s really important to have something to look forward to. This is one of the reasons why we arrange retreats. This weekend we had two families staying at Alfriston Woodland Cabins and we were honoured to gift them a hamper donated by Community Champions Morrison's Seaford Morrisons, and littlelifts boxes too. Its good for everyone’s morale and general mental health to have something to focus on, and something positive to look forward to. On top of that, quality experiences bring the family even closer together, and make lots of great memories.

Try and do things that are achievable for you all. You don’t have to go sky diving, or on expensive trips, it might be just going to the cinema, beach, a walk, dinner at your favourite restaurant or family time with the kids.

What about you. What do you all love doing as a family?

Well that was an epic morning!

Well that was an epic morning! Thank you to everyone that braved the British Airways i360 abseil, to everyone that came along to cheer us on, and to everyone that donated! Such a fab wolo moment - and the weather was perfect! So hard to pick just 10 photos!

UK Ultra South Downs 100k - Team Wolo

Couldn’t have been more proud of team Wolo as we all became Ultra Runners by completing the SD100k. Massive shout out to Marcos Jarvis and UK Ultra South Downs 100k, Neil Kirby and everyone involved for being so helpful on the day.

I’m not going to lie, I struggled big time, both mentally and physically. I tripped in the dark before I even started and cut my knee open and became a rea problem (living up to my crash test dummy nickname!)

I persevered. I came last. But I did it! I showed my kids that anything can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

Thank you to everyone who came to support us, and to everyone that has sponsored me. It make such a difference to so many families we support at WOLO Foundation

I’m off to take it easy!
